Do Doctors Recommend Massage Therapy?

By: Lisa Saccoia, BS, LMT

Picture yourself in a dimly lit room, calm music, and a warm blanket. All is calm, and you’re far away from your job, your bills, and all responsibility. Nope, you’re not in Heaven. You’re getting a massage.

Massage therapy dates back thousands of years, and the medical community is catching on. Doctors are even referring massage therapy to their patients – especially for stress reduction.

Watch this short video of  Dr. Brent Bauer, MD talking about the benefits of massage. Bauer is the Director of the Mayo Clinic Complementary and Integrative Medicine Program.

Dr. Oz is weighing in too, calling massage “A necessity, not a luxury”

… And Dr. Andrew Weil.

… And – not a doctor, but you love her – Oprah.

With many Americans sick with stress, anxiety and depression, people want an answer. Why are doctors recommending massage therapy as that answer? Here are 2 reasons:

#1: Massage Therapy Decreases Cortisol

Cortisol: aka Public enemy #1. Cortisol is a stress hormone that’s released when you’re in a dangerous situation. Getting chased by a tiger? Cortisol to the rescue!

However, if you live in a place like Albany, NY (like us), tiger attacks are few and far between.  But you do experience traffic, stress at work, and the demands of modern life. To your body, a hungry tiger and a traffic jam are the same thing. It responds the same – with a big, fat blast of cortisol.

Overtime, the effect of too much cortisol can deplete your reserves. If you have too much cortisol over a long period of time, this stress can cause:

  • Weight gain
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Prolonged wound healing
  • Memory loss
  • Increased stress and depression
  • Decreased immune function

Sound horrible? It is! But, the medical community says they’re hope.  One way to break the cycle of cortosil overload and stress is massage… Which brings us to the second reason doctors recommend massage therapy to patients.

#2.Massage Therapy Increases Endorphins

Endorphins: aka God’s gift to the human race! Endorphins are neurotransmitters produced in the brain. The endorphin transmits information the nervous system, telling it what to do. When you get a massage, your body is getting the signal to relax. Yes, you may even drool.

According to a study put out by the University of Miami: School of Medicine, massage decreases cortisol by nearly one-third. See the full Prevention Magazine article here.

Massage Therapy also releases adrenaline, serotonin, and dopamine. In layman’s terms, you’re gonna feel amazing.
