Bacteriology: What Every Massage Therapist Should Know

October 21 @9:00 am -1:00 pm

$100

4 CEUs

With Instructor Bill Rahner

Course Description:

This course will educate the students on how bacteria function in and on our bodies for good and ill. They will learn about many different bacterial infections both from the historical context and how we approach these bacteria today. For example, our traditional, adversarial relationship with bacteria is oversimplified and inaccurate. Antibacterial soap is scheduled to be banned by the FDA because it may be doing more harm than good. At the same time widespread use of probiotic supplements is definitely causing harm. This course will educate the therapists on what we know now, and the ins and outs of how to make educated choices for themselves and their clients. There are also over 100 pictures of various infections which students will have permanent access to for reference.

Objectives:

1) Via a case study of the Bubonic Plague students will identify how bacteria spreads and how to reduce spread via the adoption of universal precautions.
2) Students will explain how bacteria, antibiotics, and probiotics work and interact in and on their bodies and their clients bodies.
3) Students will identify the pathogenesis, symptomology, treatment, and avoidance of: strep, staph, pneumonia, TB, endocarditis, boils, styes, carbuncles, Lyme disease and many more.
4) Students will list the differences between bacterial and fungal infections and non-infectious skin eruptions, identify those which they can work on (ex. Psoriasis, mild eczema) and those which they cannot (ex. urticaria, contact dermatitis).

About the Instructor:

William Rahner has been teaching all the science classes and most of the practical classes at the Swedish Institute since 1987. His special areas of interest are perception and learning. He is the content provider for the moodle interactive testing platform, which has helped over a thousand students graduate, get through their boards and become massage therapists. He has decades of massage experience treating most of the diseases taught in Pathology. He has just completed graduate work at CUNY with Dr. Mika Vesanen, a prominent virologist who developed some of the medications for HIV.
