Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Viruses but Were Afraid to Ask Part 1 & Part 2

**This course is two parts that require separate registration. You do NOT need to take both parts. Each part is 4 CEUs and costs $95. Together they are 8 CEUs and $190. Part 1 is 9am-1pm. Part 2 is 2pm-6pm.**

Course Description:

Ebola? West Nile? HIV? Influenza? How do viruses work? How do antivirals and vaccines work, and are they dangerous? With so much conflicting and often erroneous information about viruses, this series of lectures will give you informed, timely information on viruses and their treatments, what’s really dangerous, and how to protect yourself and your clients.

Part 1 – Learning Outcomes & Objectives:

  1. How did we get all these cooties and what do we do about it? Students will be able to explain how viruses, antivirals, and vaccines work.
  2. Students will be able to explain the History, life cycle, pathogenesis, epidemiology and treatment of Ebola and Marburg Virus.
  3. Students will be able to explain  the History, life cycle, pathogenesis, epidemiology and treatment of HIV .
  4. Time allowing Students will be able to explain the History, life cycle, pathogenesis, epidemiology and treatment of Epstein Barre and see how it is becoming implicated a s a causative agent of multiple sclerosis.
  5. Grab bag of cooties: If there is still time left over, the class can vote on what they would like to learn about from these: Yellow Fever, Dengue, Chikungunya, West Nile, Norovirus, SARS, MERS,  Avian flu, Swine flu, Rabies, Hanta, Lassa, Varicella Zoster (Chicken Pox and shingles), Smallpox, Polio, Herpesviridae (CMV, EBV, HHV5, HHV6, HHV7, Kaposi ’s sarcoma HHV8).

Part 2 – Learning Outcomes & Objectives:

  1. Modern Pandemics: Students will be able to compare the  History, life cycle, pathogenesis, epidemiology and treatment of The biggest killer – the flu: Orthomyxoviridae – Influenza – A,B,C,D.
  2. Students will be able to compare the  History, life cycle, pathogenesis, epidemiology and treatment The gift that keeps giving: Herpesviridae – Herpes Simplex One and Two.
  3. Students will be able to compare the  History, life cycle, pathogenesis, epidemiology and treatment of “Billions served:” Papillomaviridae – Human papilloma virus.
  4. About the Instructor:

William Rahner has been teaching all the science classes and most of the practical classes at the Swedish Institute since 1987. His special areas of interest are perception and learning. He is the content provider for the moodle interactive testing platform, which has helped over a thousand students graduate, get through their boards and become massage therapists. He has decades of massage experience treating most of the diseases taught in Pathology. He has just completed graduate work at CUNY with Dr. Mika Vesanen, a prominent virologist who developed some of the medications for HIV.
