Course Description:

Part I: In this class, the students will learn about the symptoms of Lyme Disease and how to select appropriate massage techniques to help the client. We will discuss the many ways Lyme can be transmitted and means to prevent infection. Students will develop an understanding of classical and alternative treatment protocols.

Part II. Students will learn and practice on each other a unique massage technique they can use with their clients who have chronic Lyme symptoms.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Students will develop an understanding of how Lyme is transmitted and the many faces of Lyme disease, which affects multiple body systems.
  2. Students will be able to list infectious pathways, symptoms, and prevention.
  3. Students will become knowledgeable about classical and alternative treatments.
  4. Students also will learn a specific massage technique to reduce toxins in the body and alleviate pain.
  5. Students will be able to list the symptoms of Lyme disease and give examples of treatment protocols. They will demonstrate the proper mechanics for massaging a client with chronic Lyme symptoms.

Instructor Bio:

Kerstin Maile earned her MD, in Germany in 1987.  Although she does not practice medicine in the U.S., she teaches Pathology and is a certified Health Coach through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (2014). Kerstin earned her LMT in 2001 after studying Massage and Shiatsu at Boulder College in Colorado. Kerstin started her career in healthcare as an MD in Germany, but moved away from the exclusively Western way of seeing illness and developed a deep interest in alternative medicine. She studied Bioenergetic Therapy from 1993-1997 at the Society for Bioenergetic Therapy in Boston, Massachusetts. She also received a diploma in Energy Healing in 1998 from the Barbara Brennan School of Healing. Kerstin has taught Pathology at the Center for Natural Wellness School of Massage Therapy in Albany since 2005. Prior to that, Kerstin discovered her love for teaching by substitute teaching at Hudson Valley School of Massage Therapy in Highland NY, where she ended up teaching Anatomy & Physiology, Pathology, Myology and supervised in massage clinic for 3 years.
