Massage Therapy: Help in American Hospitals

Home » Career » Massage Therapy: Help in American Hospitals

For hundreds of years, Massage Therapy has been used for its ability to help with alleviating pain and stress.  Now, hospitals around the country are innovating, adopting CAM (contemporary alternative medicine) practices into everyday operations.  In 2010, a survey conducted by the American Hospital Associations Health Forum reported that 42% of responding hospitals incorporate CAM into everyday operations.   This is resulting in a significant number of hospitals making massage therapy available for all patients with varieties of pathology’s.

Massage Therapy has had a strong emergence in cardiovascular and oncology departments, and some care providers fully integrate massage therapy into a patient’s personal care plan, regardless of age.  It is now being used to aid with diagnoses such as Traumatic Brain Injury, Trauma, childhood cancers, cystic fibrosis and even heart and lung transplants.

Massage Therapy in hospitals is no new concept.  In the 1800’s and early 1900’s massage therapy was actually a standard part of nursing curriculum’s, and was a highly respected and integrated practice in hospitals.  Legislation, updated billing and insurance documentation resulted in hands-on care fading out over time.   Now after some time, Massage Therapy has had a strong re-emergence as a supportive and important part of health, wellness and recovery.
