Albany is a thriving center of transportation, and is only a few hours from New York City, Boston and Montreal as well as close to borders of Vermont and Massachusetts. The area is also a hub of commerce and the seat of New York State government.
Natural Wonders and Outdoor Activities
The area abounds in rich natural beauty and there is no shortage of outdoor activities from which to choose including hiking, skiing, boating, canoeing, camping, fishing and hunting. The Catskill Mountains, steeped in history, are close by to the south, while the magnificent six million acre Adirondack Park and Lake George (Queen of American lakes), is an hours drive north from the school.
A Rich Tradition of Medical Facilities and Colleges
The area is home to a number of excellent hospitals and medical facilities such as Albany Medical Center, St. Peters Hospital, Albany Memorial Hospital, and more. In addition, there are many nearby colleges and universities including Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Union College, Skidmore College, Russell Sage College, The College of Saint Rose and the State University of New York College at Albany (SUNY), with an undergraduate and graduate enrollment of over 19,000 students. A number of two year colleges, trade and technical schools, and institutions are also found in the area.
Culturally, the Capital Region is home to many fine museums and institutions including the Albany Institute of History and Art, and the New York State Museum at Albany, the oldest and largest institution of its kind in the nation.
In addition, the region includes the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC), Times Union Center, Troy Savings Bank Music Hall, and the Palace Theatre. There’s also the legendary Proctor’s Theatre in nearby Schenectady which hosts an incredible array of shows, plays, concerts year-round.
Restaurants, Nightlife, and Retail
Finally, the area has a great variety of restaurants, night clubs and retail establishments for your leisure time activities. Within three miles of the school you’ll find McDonald’s, Taco Bell, Wendy’s, Arby’s, Subway, Outback Steakhouse, T.G.I. Fridays, Cheesecake Factory, P.F. Changs, Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Macaroni Grill, Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks, Chili’s, and many many more local and chain restaurants. Also Crossgates Mall (third largest mall in New York) and Colonie Center (1.3 million sq. ft and over 100 specialty shops) are literally just down the street!
